Security Tips for Jewelry Stores

By Mark Mahaffey

If you are the owner of a jewelry store, you no doubt are aware that your inventory is highly sought after by crooks. By just getting their hands on a few pieces of your jewelry, they could resell it and make a large amount of money. Therefore, it is in your best interest to do everything you can to keep your store as secure as possible.

When it comes to improving your store's security, you have many choices. For instance, you can purchase video cameras. Video surveillance cameras are useful inside your store, making it possible for you to watch your customers closely. But they can also be placed outside your store, so you have a good view of any suspicious activity that may be taking place outdoors.

It is a good idea to place the video surveillance cameras where they can be seen by visitors to your store. This is because if people see the cameras, they will know they are being watched and will probably not attempt to steal from you.

For securing restricted areas, you may want to install access control. Access control is a way to control who has access to certain places inside your business. Since the area behind the display cases is so vulnerable, you could put in doors with card readers to restrict who is able to go into these this area. Only those employees who are given a card will be able to open the door and walk into the area.

Having a store greeter is also a good idea. If a store employee is standing at the door and greets each person who enters, there will likely be less theft. Make sure that the greeter makes eye contact with each person and speaks to them. This will let the visitor know that the store employee is aware of his presence in the store.

Security lighting is also a great way to upgrade your store's security. The brighter a store is at night, the less likely it is that someone will break in. This is because the lighting makes the activity inside the store very visible to those outside. Install plenty of lights and keep them lit all night long to discourage thieves from breaking into your store.
