When people are building or rebuilding a car or a motorcycle there are certain parts that are very difficult to paint or because of the type of paint they want to put on the piece a special process must be used. This process is called electrocoating. It also goes by some other names as well. Such as electroplating, or electrophoretic deposition.
A lot of people were not sure of exactly what it was when it first came on the scene. Those that did however were very aware of just how great it was at painting almost anything. It specialized in covering very difficult parts and parts that sometimes would not even hold paint. This method changed all of that.
The process involved a very large vat that would be filled with the paint and a couple chemicals that helped the paint hold a electrical charge. There was also a couple other large metal spikes in the vat that created a magnetic charge in the liquid. Then a large crane or some other type of indoor factory crane was used. It was needed pick up whatever pieces were getting painted.
The crane would grab and lift the part or collection of parts and slowly dip them into the paint. As it did the electrical and magnetic charge of the parts would actually attract the paint molecules which because of how they were treated previously would have the opposite magnetic charge as the dipped parts. This is how the paint would adhere.
Most people are not skilled with an airbrush however and unless you are trying to design a picture or paint a stenciled design onto the part, you are going to want to electrocoat the gas tank. There is no other way to get a more perfect and clean end result. The drawback is of course the design limitations. But if you are using this method on certain parts you are not worried about that.
This was great for the airline industry and they jumped on board to. The larger manufacturers started to build small operations within the factories so they could paint them on their own. They would not want to have to ship parts out just to be painted somewhere else when they could surely do that back at their own factory.
The industries that use this are numerous. The airline industry surely and other various airplane manufacturers. When in flight and airplane needs to reduce the amount of drag that it produces. The more drag there is, the slower the plane will travel and the more fuel it will burn. So using this method will ensure that the paint job is as smooth as the body and that there will be no drag produced by the paint at least.
Everybody wanted to have a piece of the electrocoating pie. The ability to cover materials with paint and have it turn out so perfectly was just amazing. People saw ways to make money were previously none existed. Some people got rich and some went broke. It was the same as any boom except this was just because of a process.
