Keep Your Car Going With These Repair Tips

By Fred Gagnon

Everyone has to deal with auto repairs at some time in their life. Car repairs can cost a significant amount of money. Whether you are doing the repairs yourself or hiring a mechanic, it is a good idea to know what you are doing. Use these tips to be better prepared when you have to fix your car.

Make sure the oil in your vehicle is changed about every 3,000 miles. Waiting longer for an oil change can result in dirt and debris fouling your oil and that can damage your engine. If you use synthetic oil in your vehicle, you only need to change the filter every other oil change.

Checking and repairing the air conditioning in your car is quite complicated. If you need to have it checked or fixed, find a mechanic with an air conditioning certification. The gas used for air conditioning is potentially dangerous and this system is a lot more complex than the other parts in your vehicle.

Contact your local Better Business Bureau if you need more information on a mechanic or a garage. If some complaints have been filed against them, your Better Business Bureau will tell you. Ask your friends and family about the different mechanics they have dealt with in the past to get some recommendations.

If your headlights look dimmer than they used to, be sure they're clean. Sometimes the road can create a greasy residue on the headlight. Cleaning your lights with a glass cleaner will allow them to perform better.

Keep all of your car records handy. You may want to have them in the glove compartment, so you can get to them easily if you need an emergency repair. Any mechanic who works on your car is going to want to see them. This can make the process go more smoothly.

In addition to basic tire changing equipment, keep a plastic tote filled with DIY auto repair supplies in the trunk of your car in case of emergencies. Fill it with at least a quart each of motor oil, transmission fluid, steering fluid, and brake fluid and a gallon of water. Add a can of penetrating oil spray, a roll of duct tape, twine, bungee cords and basic tools so that you can manage minor repairs on the road.

Suspension

If you feel vibration when you drive or have a hard time steering the wheel, you should have a mechanic look at your car. The problem could be cause by misaligned wheels, a broken transmission or a damaged suspension. You should get the problem checked before it gets any worse.

Just because your vehicle is temporarily broken down, doesn't mean you've got to spend all your money on expensive repairs. Quite often, you can fix basic issues by yourself. Use all of these tips to help you with those types of repairs.
